Intuitive Shipping lets you quickly create a copy of an existing shipping method within the same Scenario. This is handy if there are certain settings, like carrier account credentials or package dimensions, that you don’t want to add manually more than once.

Let’s say you have an account with UPS and you want to set up separate shipping methods for your domestic and international shipping Zones. You can easily set up one UPS shipping method with your account credentials, then create an exact copy and add it to another Zone.

Or, let’s say you want to set up live rates for both UPS and FedEx in the same Zone, and you don’t want to go through the tedious process of manually adding the same 20 or 30 package sizes to each shipping method.

When you create a copy, all of the settings – including carrier account credentials and package sizes – are copied exactly. Then, you only need to make minor changes to suit your copy, such as replacing domestic service types with international ones or replacing one carrier’s credentials with another.

You can create a copy of any shipping method, whether it’s a Live Rate Shipping Method or a Custom (flat-rate) Shipping Method.

Copy A Shipping Method

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Add a Shipping Scenario or edit an existing one.

3) If you’re adding a new Scenario, complete the General Settings and Conditions sections as required.

4) If you’re adding a new Scenario – or if you need to set up a new shipping method to be copied later – click Add Shipping Method beside a Zone.

5) Set up either a Custom Shipping Method for flat rates or a pre-determined table of rates or a Live Rate Shipping Method for real-time shipping rates from a carrier.

Copy a Shipping Method To a Different Zone

Quickly copy an existing shipping method from one Zone to another. This is useful if you have, for example, a ‘domestic’ UPS live rate shipping method with your carrier account credentials and you want to set an ‘international’ UPS shipping method without having to re-enter all of your package and carrier account settings.

Use these steps to copy any shipping method from one Zone to another.

For this example, we’re using a live rate shipping method for UPS.

If you prefer to copy a shipping method to the same Zone, skip to the next section.

1) Click Copy beside an existing shipping method.

2) On the Copy Shipping Method popup box, click on a different shipping Zone than the one used by your original.

3) If changes are needed, click Edit beside the shipping method you just copied to a different Zone.

4) Make any required changes to your custom (flat-rate) or live rate shipping method, then click the Save button.

Copy a Shipping Method To the Same Zone

Easily add a copy of an existing shipping method to the same shipping Zone. This is useful if you have, for example, a UPS live rate shipping method with 30 different package sizes and you want to offer a FedEx shipping method without having to re-enter all of your package settings.

Use these steps to copy any shipping method from one Zone to another.

For this example, we’re using a live rate shipping method for UPS and FedEx.

1) Click Copy beside an existing shipping method.

2) On the Copy Shipping Method popup box, click on the same shipping Zone used by your original.

3) Click Edit beside the shipping method you just copied. It doesn’t matter which shipping method you edit. At this point, both copies are identical.

4) Make any required changes to your custom (flat-rate) or live rate shipping method, then click the Save button.

After saving, you’ll see both your original and your edited copy listed in the same Zone.

Copying Shipping Methods To Another Scenario

While you can’t copy an existing shipping method from one Scenario directly to another, you can duplicate the entire Scenario, including all of the shipping methods within it. A duplicate Scenario is an exact copy of the original.

The Scenario Title must be updated before you can save the duplicate.

Let’s say you have a Retail Scenario with a live rate shipping method for UPS. The shipping method includes your UPS account credentials and has package sizes for more than 20 packages. Your UPS shipping method has a threshold that offers free shipping when customers spend $50.00 or more.

Now you want to set up a Wholesale Scenario with the exact same shipping method, except you want to set the free shipping threshold to $300.00.

Rather than creating a new Scenario and setting up the same shipping method from scratch twice, you’d rather just make a copy and adjust the free shipping threshold. To do this, you’ll need to create a duplicate of your original Scenario, make changes to the Scenario settings, such as the Title and Conditions, then edit the shipping method(s) to make whatever changes are required (the free shipping threshold) while preserving the original package and carrier settings.

Condition Groups is one of Intuitive Shipping’s most commonly used features, primarily because it is used to create Postal code or Zip code sub-zones. This feature allows you to create shipping zones that can’t otherwise be set up directly in Shopify, such as counties and geographic regions in the United Kingdom. For example, you may only ship within London and surrounding areas, or you may want to exclude shipping to customers in the Scottish Highlands.

With Intuitive Shipping, you can exclude specific regions in the UK by setting up postcode sub-zones. This guide will explain how to set up sub-zones within the UK, and provide you with cut-and-paste postcode ranges to save you the time of entering them manually.

Find a complete list of postcode ranges by country and county at the bottom of this article.

Add A Sub-zone Condition Group

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Condition Groups from the drop-down list.

2) Click the Add Condition Group Button.

3) Enter a Condition Group Title – e.g. Isle of Wight.

Condition Group Titles are not visible to customers, so name them something that can be easily identified when you set up your Shipping Scenario later.

4) Under Condition Match, select All Conditions Below Must Be Satisfied.

5) Click the Add Another Condition button.

6) Click the Condition field, then select Postal Code/ Zip Code under the Customer Conditions section.

7) Set the Condition logic to Equals.

8) Enter the postcode range – e.g. PO301AB:PO410ZN, then select UK postal code format from the drop-down list below the range.

A range is two postcodes (the first in the range and the last in the range) separated by a : colon symbol, without any spaces.

You can enter multiple individual postcodes, multiple ranges or a combination of the two on a single line using a comma to separate each individual postcode or range.

For example, you can enter PO301AB:PO301ZQ, PO303AA:PO304QU – two ranges separated by comma – as a single value for the Condition.

UK postal code format requires that you input the full postcode without spaces in Step 8 – e.g. AB10AF:AB19YB (instead of ‘AB1 0AF:AB1 9YB’). Learn more about formatting postal codes in Intuitive Shipping here.

Unlike many other international postal codes, UK postcodes cannot be abbreviated within Intuitive Shipping. That’s because an abbreviation such as ‘SE1’ would inadvertently include postcodes that begin ‘SE10’ which is a different area of London than ‘SE1’.

An error message will be displayed if the format is entered incorrectly.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button to save your Sub-zone Condition Group!

Add More Sub-zone Condition Groups

1) Repeat Steps 1 to 8 from Add A Sub-zone Condition Group to create any additional UK sub-zones.

You can create as many Sub-zone Condition Groups as you need and name them whatever you like.

Add Sub-zone To A Shipping Scenario

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Create a new Shipping Scenario or edit an existing Scenario.

3) If creating a new Scenario, set Visibility to On.

When Visibility is set to Off, Shipping Methods from this Scenario will only be visible when you use the customer name ‘Intuitive Shipping’ at checkout. Learn more about Visibility settings here.

4) If creating a new Scenario, enter the Shipping Scenario Title – e.g. Isle of Wight.

You do not need to name the Scenario after the Condition Group Sub-zone. For example, if your Scenario has other Conditions besides the Condition Group Sub-zone – e.g. the ‘Entire Cart is Greater than or equals 100’ (£100), it may make sense to reference the other Condition in the title – e.g. ‘Free Shipping over £100’.

The Shipping Scenario Title is not visible to customers, but it helps keep you organized within the Intuitive Shipping app.

Set The Sub-zone Condition

1) Leave the settings under Condition Match, Product Filtering, and Advanced Options on their Default settings.

2) In the Conditions section, click the Add Another Condition button.

3) Click the Condition field. Then from the list of options, select your newly created sub-zone under the Conditions Group section.

Conditions groups are located near the bottom of the Conditions drop-down list.

4) Set the Condition logic to Equals or Does Not Equal.

Select Equals if customers with postcodes in this sub-zone are eligible for shipping rates from this Scenario.

Select Does Not Equal if customers with postcodes in this sub-zone are ineligible for shipping rates from this Scenario.

5) Set the Value to True.

6) If desired, repeat Steps 3 to 5 to add more excluded – i.e. ‘Does not equal’ – sub-zones to the Scenario.

For example, if you created two (2) Sub-zone Condition Groups – Isle of Wight, and Northern Ireland – and customers from both sub-zones are ineligible for shipping rates, you can add two conditions:

Isle of Wight Does Not Equal True

Northern Ireland Does Not Equal True

We recommend against having multiple included Sub-zone Condition Groups where more than one sub-zone equals ‘True’.

That’s because a customer’s address would have to be included in every sub-zone for the Scenario to work correctly.

Alternatively, we recommend creating separate Scenarios for each included – i.e. ‘Equals’ – Sub-zone Condition Group, especially if you have other Conditions in the Scenario. See Add More Sub-zone Scenarios below.

Using the same example as above, if you want to include shipping rates to both Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland, add ‘Isle of Wight Equals True‘ to one Scenario, then add ‘Northern Ireland Equals True‘ to another Scenario.

Add A Shipping Method

If your Scenario already includes Shipping Methods and you don’t need to make any changes, skip ahead to Add More Sub-zone Scenarios.

1) In the Shipping Methods section, click Add Shipping Method beside your United Kingdom (UK) Shipping Zone which includes the sub-zones being referenced in this Scenario.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Add More Sub-zone Scenarios

You can create a separate Scenario for each sub-zone if required. To simplify the process, you can make a Duplicate of your first Scenario, then make minor adjustments to the Condition and Shipping Methods, rather than creating a new Scenario from scratch.

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Click Edit beside your original Scenario – e.g. Isle of Wight (or whatever title you chose to give your original Scenario).

3) Click the Duplicate button in the top right. This will create an exact copy of the original Scenario, including any Shipping Methods.

4) Confirm Visibility is set to On.

5) Change the Shipping Scenario Title from ‘Copy of [your original title]’ to a new title – e.g. Northern Ireland. As with the original, you can name your Duplicate Scenario anything. You do not need to reference the sub-zone specifically.

The Shipping Scenario Title is not visible to customers, but it helps keep you organized within the Intuitive Shipping app.

Update The Shipping Methods

When you created a Duplicate of the original Scenario, it included exact copies of the Shipping Methods you added to the original.

For your Duplicate Scenarios, you may wish to add new Shipping Methods from scratch, remove Shipping Methods that don’t apply or edit an existing Shipping Method to make minor adjustments – e.g. the Shipping Cost.

Shipping Methods should only be added to Shipping Zones that include the UK postcodes in the Sub-zone Condition Group.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Postcode Ranges by County

To make it easier for you to set up Sub-zones as Condition Groups, here is a list of postcode ranges by UK Country and county.

To add a set of ranges for a specific county to your Condition Group, copy and paste the entire string of ranges below the county name into the Condition Value field (see Add A Sub-zone Condition Group Step 8).

If you are adding more than one county to a single Condition Group, be sure to add a comma between each string of ranges.

For example, if you want to add both Bedforshire and Birkshire to a single Condition Group, make sure you add a comma between ‘SG54XA’ – the last postcode in Bedforshire – and ‘GU470AB’ – the first postcode in Birkshire.

With Intuitive Shipping, you can create a Custom Shipping Method with a single flat rate or a table of pre-defined rates. Using a variety of features and settings, you can configure your custom shipping rates in a number of different ways.

This guide explains each of the features in the Shipping Method screen that directly impact the shipping price, and provides some examples of how different settings can help you achieve specific outcomes with your shipping costs.

This guide is intended for those setting up custom, flat rate shipping costs. To learn how to set up a Live Rate Shipping Method and connect to your preferred carriers, go here.

When creating a Scenario you’ll need to add a Shipping Method to at least one Shipping Zone. The Shipping Method is where you’ll set up your shipping costs.

Shipping Zones are set up in your Shopify Settings. To learn how to adjust your Shipping Zones, click here.

First, you’ll need to set up the Display Settings. These settings determine how your Shipping Method will be shown to your customers at checkout, including the Title – e.g. ‘Local Delivery’ – and the Description – e.g ‘Delivered on Tuesdays and Fridays Only, by 6:00 pm’.

Once you’ve completed the Display Settings section, you’ll begin setting up your shipping costs.

Calculate Shipping Based On

The first step in setting up your shipping costs is to select the Calculation Method. This setting determines what your shipping costs will be based on.

You will need to select a Calculation Method from the drop-down list. Calculation Methods are grouped into categories, which can be seen after clicking under ‘Select The Shipping Calculation Method‘.

Cart Values

This group of Calculation Methods looks at the combination of all items in the customer’s cart at checkout.

Cart quantity

Shipping costs will be based on the total number of items in the customer’s cart. This is the default setting.

This setting is useful when you have no other restrictions or limits on your shipping rates, and the cost of shipping is based solely on how many items the customer buys.

Cart total

Shipping costs will be based on the total dollar value of goods in the customer’s cart, before tax.

Taxes are handled directly by Shopify and are not included in whole cart shipping calculations. To learn more about how Shopify handles taxes, go here.

The Cart total is calculated before taxes, and generally is calculated before discounts are applied.

When using Shopify discounts, please be aware that due to how information is passed to Intuitive Shipping at checkout, our system cannot verify if a discount is being used. In some situations, the discount is applied to the cart total before shipping is calculated, and in others, the discount is applied after shipping is calculated.

This setting is useful when you have no physical limits on your shipping rates, and the cost of shipping is based solely on how much the customer spends.

Cart weight

Shipping costs will be based on the total weight of goods in the customer’s cart.

Product weights can be added to Intuitive Shipping when you add product dimensions. When weights are not present, Intuitive Shipping will look at the product weights in your Shopify Product Information settings.

When weights are present in both Intuitive Shipping and Shopify – and the weights are different – the weight value in Intuitive Shipping will supersede the weight in Shopify.

This setting is useful when the cost of shipping is limited or determined by the weight of the customer’s order.

Cart volume

Shipping costs will be based on the total volume of goods in the customer’s cart.

Volume = Length (or Depth) x Width x Height

To calculate based on cart volume, products interacting with this shipping method must have dimensions.

This setting is useful when the cost of shipping is limited or determined by the overall space taken up by the items in the customer’s cart.

Distance

Shipping costs will be based on the total distance (in kilometers) between the default shipping location in your Shopify settings and the customer’s address.

Shopify’s standard unit of measure for distance is ‘kilometers’ (km). This cannot be changed in Intuitive Shipping or in Shopify.

Distance is calculated between postal codes using Google Maps. Intuitive Shipping has the ability to calculate distance more accurately using the full address. However, doing so requires the customer address to be free of typos and entered accurately using Google’s formatting.

For example, a customer address based in the city of St. Paul may be entered by a customer as ‘St Paul’ (without the period) or ‘Saint Paul’ (without the abbreviation). If the address is not formatted or spelled correctly (by Google’s definition), the calculation may fail.

If you require greater accuracy for your distance-based rates and need them to be calculated using the full address, please contact us.

Distance-based rates use Google Directions and Geocoding, and require a Google API. Learn how to create your Google API credentials and add your API key to Intuitive Shipping here.

This setting is useful when the cost of shipping is determined by the proximity of the customer’s delivery address to your store or warehouse.

Per Product Values

This group of calculation methods looks at the presence of unique products in the customer’s cart at checkout.

Any product with a product ID or variant ID is considered a unique product.

Product Quantity

Shipping costs will be based on the number of unique products in the customer’s cart.

Let’s say your shipping cost is $10.00 per product, and a customer orders 2 XL red shirts, 1 XL blue shirt, and 1 black baseball cap. They have 3 unique items in their cart, so they’ll be charged $30.00 for shipping at checkout (3 items x $10.00).

This setting is useful when your shipping costs are determined by the number of different products you ship.

Product Price

Shipping costs will be based on the number of unique product prices in the customer’s cart.

Let’s say your shipping cost is $10.00 per product price, and a customer orders 2 XL red shirts, 1 XL blue shirt, and 1 black baseball cap. They have 4 unique product prices in their cart, so they’ll be charged $40.00 for shipping at checkout (4 prices x $10.00).

This setting is useful when your shipping costs are tied to the cost of each item being shipped.

Product Total

Shipping costs will be based on the number of unique product subtotals in the customer’s cart.

Let’s say you have a table of shipping costs like this:

• a $10.00 shipping cost for product totals up to $19.99
• a $30.00 shipping cost for product totals up to $49.99
• a $50.00 shipping cost for product totals up to $99.99

A customer ordering 1 XL red t-shirt at $16.99 will be charged $10.00 for shipping at checkout because there is 1 unique product total which is within the $19.99 limit.

A customer ordering 1 XL red t-shirt and 1 XL blue t-shirt, each at $16.99, will be charged $20.00 at checkout because there are 2 unique product totals, and each is within the $19.99 limit ($10.00 + $10.00).

A customer ordering 4 XL red t-shirts, each at $16.99, for a product subtotal of $67.96, 1 XL blue t-shirt at $16.99 and 1 black baseball cap at $29.99 will be charged $90.00 for shipping at checkout, because the subtotal for the red shirts is within the $99.99 limit, the subtotal for the blue shirt is within the $19.99 limit and the subtotal for the baseball cap is within the $49.99 limit ($50.00 + $10.00 + $30.00).

This setting is useful when your shipping costs are impacted by the total value of each product being shipped.

Product Weight

Shipping costs will be based on the number of unique product weight totals in the customer’s cart.

Let’s say you have a table of shipping costs like this:

• a $10.00 cost for product weights up to 5 lbs
• a $30.00 cost for product weights up to 20 lbs
• an $80.00 cost for product weights up to 50 lbs

A customer ordering 1 x 3 lb pack of frozen shrimp will be charged $10.00 for shipping at checkout because there is one unique product weight which is within the 5 lb limit.

A customer ordering 2 x 3 lb packs of frozen shrimp, 1 x 10 lb pack of frozen shrimp and 3 x 45 lb packs of frozen fish will be charged $290.00 for shipping at checkout because there are 2 packs of shrimp, each within the 5 lb limit, 1 pack of shrimp within the 20 lb limit and 3 pack of fish, each within the 50 lb limit ($10.00 + $10.00 + $30.00 + $80.00 + $80.00 + $80.00).

This setting is useful when your shipping costs are based on the individual weights of each product being shipped.

Product Volume

Shipping costs will be based on the number of unique product volume calculations in the customer’s cart.

Volume = Length (or Depth) x Width x Height

Let’s say you have a table of shipping costs like this:

• a $10.00 cost for product volumes up to 2000 in³ (cubic inches)
• a $25.00 cost for product volumes up to 5000 in³

A customer ordering 1 Pro tool kit with dimensions 10 x 15 x 20 (3000 in³) will be charged $25.00 for shipping at checkout because there is one unique product volume which is within the 5000 in³ limit.

A customer ordering 1 Pro Lite tool kit with dimensions 8 x 15 x 15 (1800 in³) and 2 Pro tool kits, each with dimensions 10 x 15 x 20 (3000 in³), will be charged $60.00 for shipping at checkout because the Pro Lite kit is within the 2000 in³ limit and the 2 Pro kits are each within the 5000 in³ limit ($10.00 + $25.00 + $25.00).

This setting is useful when your shipping costs are determined by the space taken up by individual items.

Carrier Services

This group of calculation methods is intended for Live Rate Shipping Methods. When selecting a live rate carrier, you can still make adjustments to the final shipping costs.

Advanced Rating

This group of calculation methods is intended for more advanced functions.

Shipping costs will be based on a custom calculation formula when other, more conventional calculation methods do not achieve the desired outcome. For more information on how to create a custom formula, please contact us.

We strongly recommend using custom formulas only if you are an advanced user.

Third-Party Integrations

This group of calculations methods connects your shipping costs with our integrated partners. An API Key from our integrated partner may be required to complete the setup.

Printful

Shipping costs will be based on Printful shipping rates. You can still make adjustments to the final shipping costs.

Shipping Costs

Next, you’ll need to set up the value of your shipping costs. These settings determines what the actual shipping costs will look like.

Along with the shipping cost, you will need to determine the limiting (‘Up To’) factor of each cost. You’ll also have the option to make your cost a ‘per unit’ cost instead of a whole cost.

Up To

This is the maximum allowable limit to qualify for the shipping cost in its corresponding row before the system looks at the next row down (if available). The unit of measure for the ‘Up To’ limit is directly related to the Calculation Method selected earlier in the setup process.

For example, if you are calculating shipping based on Cart total (the entire value of goods in the cart), the unit of measure for your Up To limit will be your Shopify currency – e.g. USD.

If however, you are calculating shipping based on weight, such as Product Weight (the weight of each unique product in the cart), the unit of measure will be the weight unit selected in your Intuitive Shipping Settings – e.g. kg (kilograms).

If you only have a single flat rate shipping cost in your Shipping Method, and there is no product or enter cart limit, you can use the ~ (tilde) symbol to indicate ‘no upper limit’.

For example, if you have a single flat rate shipping cost of $25.00 for an unlimited number of items, you can select Cart quantity as the Calculation Method, then enter the cost like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 25 ($25.00)
• Per Unit = [leave blank]

Shipping Cost

This is the actual cost value that will be used in the calculation. Be sure to enter a numerical value, such as ’10’ or ‘11.50’. When entering a whole dollar amount and there is nothing after the decimal – e.g. your shipping cost is $50.00 – you can enter it as either ’50’ or ‘50.00’.

The ‘$’ symbol is not required and will result in calculation errors when used.

The currency for your shipping cost is determined by your default Shopify currency. To change your currency setting, go to your Shopify settings after saving your Shipping Method.

Be sure to resync your settings with Intuitive Shipping after making changes to your default currency.

Changing currency settings does not automatically convert your shipping costs. For example, if your shipping cost is $10.00 USD and you change your currency setting to ‘GBP’ (British pound sterling), your shipping cost will be £10.00. You will need to manually convert $10.00 USD to the GBP equivalent.

You can also enter costs as a percentage – e.g. ‘20%’. To distinguish your percentage cost from a dollar amount, you must include the ‘%’ symbol.

Costs entered as a percentage will be calculated based on the dollar value of the cart.

For example, let’s say you enter a Shipping Cost of ‘15%’.

A customer ordering $100.00 worth of items will be charged $15.00 for shipping at checkout.

Per Unit (Optional)

This optional setting allows you to create a shipping cost based on multiples of each unit in the calculation method.

If you have no ‘Per Unit’ shipping costs, leave this setting blank. Entering ‘0’ will result in an error.

Let’s say you select a calculation method of Cart quantity (the total number of items in the cart) and have a shipping cost like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 10 ($10.00)
• Per Unit = 1 (1 item)

A customer ordering 3 XL red t-shirts will be charged $30.00 for shipping at checkout because there are 3 items in the cart ($10.00 per 1 item; 3 items x $10.00 = $30.00).

Similarly, a customer ordering 2 XL red t-shirts, 1 black baseball cap and 3 pairs of white socks will be charged $60.00 for shipping at checkout because there are 6 items in the cart ($10.00 per 1 item; 6 items x $10.00 = $60.00).

Now, let’s say you select a calculation method of Cart volume (i.e. the total volume of all items in the customer’s cart) and have a shipping cost like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 5 ($5.00)
• Per Unit = 100 (100 in³ – i.e. cubic inches)

When the value being calculated is a decimal, ‘Per Unit’ will automatically round the value up to the nearest whole value before multiplying the cost – e.g. a weight of 1.25 lbs will be rounded to 2 lbs, so that the ‘Per Unit’ cost would be [cost] x 2.

A customer ordering 1 Pro Lite tool kit with dimensions 8 x 15 x 15 (1800 in³) will be charged $90.00 for shipping at checkout (1800/100 = 18 ‘units’; 18 x $5.00 = $90.00).

Rate Tables

You can enter as many cost rows as you need by clicking the Add Another Shipping Cost Button once for each cost row.

A rate table should be displayed in descending order from the lowest limit to the highest limit. For example, if your shipping costs increase based on Distance, your rate table should look something like this:

Alternatively, if your shipping costs decrease based on the number of Items, your rate table should look something like this:

In both cases above, rows are configured descending from the lowest ‘Up To’ limit to the highest ‘Up To’ limit.

You can drag and drop each shipping cost row to rearrange the order.

If you have a rate table with a fixed limit – meaning, once a customer’s cart hits the highest available ‘Up To’ limit and the shipping costs are no longer increasing (or decreasing) – a cart that exceeds the limit will fail.

Let’s say you have a table of shipping costs like this:

In this case, a customer ordering more than 100 items (that meet the conditions of the Scenario) will not get a rate from this Shipping Method.

If you do not want a ‘no limit’ shipping cost (with a ~ symbol), you will need to have a fall-back Shipping Scenario or Shipping Method that will trigger in the event that this Shipping Method fails. Otherwise, the customer will not be able to complete their checkout.

Alternatively, you can add a Split Cart option which will repeat the rate table each time the cart exceeds the highest ‘Up To’ limit. To learn how to use the Split Cart feature, continue to the Additional Settings section below.

Additional Settings

You can use the Additional Settings features to achieve even more outcomes with your shipping costs.

To access these features, click on Additional Settings below the ‘Shipping Cost’ rows.

Calculation Method

This setting lets you decide if only one qualifying cost row will be returned to the customer, or if all the qualifying rows – meaning, the cart meets the ‘Up To’ limit of multiple rows – will be blended together.

You have two options to choose from:

Return Only A Single Row – The shipping cost will be returned only from the highest row with an ‘Up To’ limit met by the customer’s order. This is the default setting.

Let’s say your shipping is calculated based on Cart quantity (total number of items in the cart), with shipping costs like this:

• a $10.00 cost up to 20 total items
• a $15.00 cost up to 30 total items
• a $25.00 cost with no upper limit

A customer ordering a total of 25 items will be charged $15.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeded the limit of the first row, but not the second row. The cost from the second row is displayed to the customer.

A customer ordering a total of 65 items will be charged $25.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeded the limit of the first two rows, but not the third row (which has no limit). The cost from the ‘no limit’ row is displayed to the customer.

This setting is useful when you want to ensure that your customer only pays the shipping cost that is within the highest qualifying limit of the calculation method.

Return The Highest Row Plus All Lesser Rows – The shipping cost will be returned as a combination of each row up to the highest qualifying limit.

Let’s say your shipping is calculated based on Distance (total distance between the customer’s address and your shipping location), with shipping costs like this:

• a $10.00 cost up to a distance of 25 km
• an additional $15.00 cost up to a distance of 50 km
• an additional $15.00 cost with no upper limit (within the Shipping Zone)

A customer whose address is 3 km away will be charged $10.00 for shipping at checkout because their distance from your shipping location is within the limit of the first row.

A customer whose address is 30 km away will be charged $25.00 for shipping at checkout because their distance from your shipping location exceeds the limit of the first row (the ‘lesser’ row), but not the second row. The costs from the first and second rows are blended together into a single cost ($10.00 + $15.00).

A customer whose address is 90 km away will be charged $40.00 for shipping at checkout because their distance from your shipping location exceeds the limits of the first and second rows (the ‘lesser’ rows), but not the third row (which has no limit). The costs from all three rows are blended together into a single cost ($10.00 + $15.00 + $15.00).

This setting is useful when you want your shipping costs to have a cumulative effect that isn’t a multiple of the base cost – meaning, it can’t be achieved with the ‘Per Unit’ feature.

Combining A Whole Cost With A ‘Per Unit’ Cost

You can also use ‘Return The Highest Row Plus All Lesser Rows’ to combine a fixed, minimum shipping cost with a ‘Per Unit’ cost. To do this, you need to set a base cost on the first row, then set a ‘Per Unit’ cost on the next row.

Let’s say you’ve selected a calculation method of Cart weight (total weight of goods in the customer’s cart). You have a base shipping cost of $30.00, regardless of weight, up to 50 lbs. After 50 lbs, you have a $5.00 premium for every additional 10 lbs. To achieve this, your shipping costs will look like this:

First Shipping Cost Row

• Up To = 50 (50 lbs)
• Shipping Cost = 30 ($30.00)
• Per Unit = [leave blank]

Second Shipping Cost Row

• Up To = ~ (no upper limit)
• Shipping Cost = 5 ($5.00)
• Per Unit = 10 (per 10 lbs)

And you’ve selected ‘Return The Highest Row Plus All Lesser Rows’ in Additional Settings.

A customer ordering 24 lbs of rice will be charged $30.00 for shipping at checkout because their order is within the limit of the base shipping cost.

A customer ordering 62 lbs of rice will be charged $40.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeds the limit of the base shipping cost by 11 lbs, meaning it also exceeds the ‘Per Unit’ limit once, then meets it a second time ($30.00 + $5.00 + $5.00).

A customer ordering 90 lbs of rice will be charged $50.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeds the limit of the base shipping cost by 39 lbs, meaning it also exceeds the ‘Per Unit’ limit 3 times, then meets it a fourth time ($30.00 + $5.00 + $5.00 + $5.00 + $5.00).

Think of each ‘Per Unit’ value as its own ‘Up To’ limit. In the example above, it would be like saying:

• $30 up to 50 lbs
• Plus, $5.00 up to 60 lbs
• Plus another $5.00 up to 70 lbs
• Plus another $5.00 up to 80 lbs

…and so on.

Split Cart

This setting lets you split the cart once the ‘Up To’ limit of the highest limit row has been exceed.

We recommend using the Split Cart feature with the ‘Return Only A Single Row’ setting.

The Split Cart function will not work when there is a ‘no limit’ value (the ~ tilde symbol) in the ‘Up To’ field of one of the cost rows.

Let’s say you’ve hired an independent courier to handle your local wine deliveries. You have a single crate size for shipping that holds up to 10 bottles, and your courier charges $15.00 per crate, but you have no limit on how many bottles can be sold to your customers. With your calculation method set to Cart quantity (total number of items in the customer’s cart), your shipping cost will look like this:

• Up To = 10 (10 items)
• Shipping Cost = 15 ($15.00)
• Per Unit = [leave blank]

You’ve also selected ‘Return Only The Highest Row’ and toggled Split Cart to ‘On’ in Additional Settings.

A local customer ordering 8 bottles of wine will be charged $15.00 for shipping at checkout because their order meets the ‘Up To’ limit of 10.

A local customer ordering 35 bottles of wine will be charged $60.00 for shipping at checkout because their cart has been split each time it exceeds 10 bottles ($15.00 each for 3 full crates of 10 bottles + another $15.00 for a partial crate of 5 bottles).

If you have a table of rates and not just a single flat rate, ‘Split Cart’ will restart the rate table each time the ‘Up To’ limit of the highest row is exceeded.

Let’s say you have 4 different crate sizes – one for 6 bottles, one for 12 bottles, one for 18 bottles, and one for 24 bottles. Each crate size has its own shipping cost because of the differences in size and weight. But you have no limit on how many bottles a customer can order, and you may receive orders of more than 24 bottles. With your calculation method set to Cart quantity (total number of items in the customer’s cart), your shipping cost will look like this:

First Shipping Cost Row

• Up To = 6 (6 items)
• Shipping Cost = 8 ($8.00)

Second Shipping Cost Row

• Up To = 12 (12 items)
• Shipping Cost = 15 ($15.00)

Third Shipping Cost Row

• Up To = 18
• Shipping Cost = 25

Fourth Shipping Cost Row

• Up To = 24
• Shipping Cost = 40

You’ve left ‘Per Unit’ blank on each row. Additionally, you’ve selected ‘Return Only The Highest Row’ and toggled Split Cart to ‘On’ in Additional Settings.

A local customer ordering 10 bottles will be charged $15.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeds the limit of the first row and is within the limit of the second row.

A local customer ordering 18 bottles will be charged $25.00 because their order exceeds the limits of the first and second rows and meets the limit of the third row exactly.

A local customer ordering 50 bottles will be charged $88.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeds the limits of the fourth (highest) row and has been split – 24 bottles + 24 bottles + 2 bottles ($40.00 each for the full 24-bottle crates + $8.00 for the partial 6-bottle crate).

Split Cart Limitations

In some cases, there may be a ‘Split Cart’ situation where it makes sense to split the cart in a more cost-effective way. Let’s say a customer orders 36 bottles. Using the same rate table setup as above, the customer would be charged $55.00 for shipping at checkout because their order would be split into one crate of 24 bottles ($40.00) and one crate of 12 bottles ($15.00). But if the order was packaged in two crates of 18 bottles ($25.00 each), the customer could be charged $50.00 instead.

Because Intuitive Shipping doesn’t work with dynamic data, the system can’t make the distinction, “If the customer orders ‘x’ number of bottles, split the cart one way. If the customer orders ‘y’ number of bottles, split the cart another way.”

‘Split Cart’ can only divide the items in the cart based on how the rate table is set up.

Adjust Final Shipping Cost (Optional)

After setting up your main shipping costs, you can make further adjustments to how the final shipping cost is displayed to your customer.

While some of these settings may be better suited for live rates, you can still apply them to your custom rates if you can’t achieve the desired outcome in the Shipping Costs section alone.

Cost Limits

You can use Cost Limits to ensure that your customers never go below or above fixed amounts, apply a discount on shipping, or add a mark up.

Minimum Cost

This setting lets you establish a shipping cost ‘floor’ so that customers never pay less than a certain amount.

Let’s say you’ve selected a calculation method of Cart weight and your shipping costs are $2.00 per pound. But you can’t ship for less than $10.00, regardless of weight. To achieve this, your shipping cost will look like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)

• Shipping Cost = 2 ($2.00)

• Per Unit = 1 (1 lb)

You’ve left Additional Settings as-is (no changes to the default settings).

In the Cost Limits section, you’ve entered a Minimum Cost of ’10’ ($10.00)

A customer ordering 3 lbs of rice will be charged $10.00 for shipping at checkout because their order is below the ‘Minimum Cost’ (3 lbs x $2.00 = $6.00).

A customer ordering 15 lbs of rice will be charged $30.00 for shipping at checkout because their order exceeds the ‘Minimum Cost’ and is calculated ‘per pound’ (15 lbs x $2.00 = $30.00).

This setting is more commonly used with Live Rate Shipping Methods but can be used as an alternative to combining a base shipping cost with a ‘Per Unit’ cost as previously described in the Per Unit (Optional) section.

Maximum Cost

This setting lets you establish a shipping cost ‘ceiling’ so that the customer never pays more than a certain amount.

Let’s say you’ve selected a calculation method of Cart quantity and you have a pricing table based on the number of wine bottles per crate. You have a 6-bottle crate that costs $8.00 to ship, a 12-bottle crate that costs $15.00 to ship and a 24-bottle crate that costs $40.00 to ship.

You’ve also enabled ‘Split Cart’ so that a customer ordering more than 24 bottles pays per crate, depending on their total order size. But, to encourage orders from customers who order several bottles at once, you’ve limited the amount they’ll pay for shipping to $100.00. In the Cost Limits section, you’ve entered a Maximum Cost of ‘100’ ($100.00).

A customer ordering 48 bottles of wine will be charged $80.00 for shipping at checkout because their order will be shipped in 2 full crates of 24 bottles ($40.00 + $40.00)

A customer ordering 70 bottles of wine will be charged $100.00 for shipping at checkout because their order will be shipped in 2 full 24-bottle crates, plus one partial 24-bottle crate ($40.00 +$40.00 + $40.00), which, at an actual shipping cost of $120.00, exceeds the maximum cost.

This setting is more commonly used with Live Rate Shipping Methods but can be used in a ‘Per Unit’ cost or ‘Split Cart’ setup where shipping costs that could potentially increase infinitely are capped.

Enter Minimum and Maximum Costs as a numerical value. For example, if the cost is $10.00, enter ’10’. Adding the ‘$’ symbol to the Shipping Cost will result in a calculation error.

Mark Up/ Mark Down

This setting lets you either decrease or increase the final shipping cost, as either a flat amount – e.g. $10.00 – or a percentage – e.g. 5%.

Enter flat amounts as a numerical value – e.g. enter ’10’ for a flat amount of $10.00. Using the ‘$’ symbol will result in calculation errors. Enter percentage amounts with the ‘%’ symbol – e.g. enter ‘5%’ for a percentage increase of 5%.

For negative amounts, use the ‘-‘ (dash) – e.g. to enter a markdown of $10.00, enter ‘-10’. To enter a markdown of 5%, enter ‘-5%’.

Let’s say you have a table of 15 shipping rates that increases shipping by $10.00 when the Cart quantity in the customer’s cart increases by certain amounts.

For two weeks, you’re going to reduce shipping costs by 20% as a test run, but you don’t want to manually lower shipping prices, then increase them again at the end of the trial. Instead, you can update your existing Shipping Method by entering ‘-20%’ in Mark Up/ Mark Down, then remove it at the end of the two week period.

Or, let’s say you have a table of 20 shipping rates provided by your local, independent courier with rates that increase incrementally when the Cart volume in the customer’s cart increases by 500 in³ (cubic inches).

Your courier has informed you that they’ll be adding a $5.00 surcharge on all of their rates for a limited time to offset a sudden spike in fuel costs, but they expect to remove the surcharge after a few weeks. You don’t want to manually increase each rate by $5.00. Instead, you can update your existing Shipping Method by entering ‘5’ in Mark Up/ Mark Down, then remove it when the courier’s surcharge is no longer required.

These settings are more commonly used for Live Rate Shipping Methods but can be used to easily increase or decrease all of your custom table rates by a set amount or percentage.

Additional Fees

If you have additional expenses as part of your overall fulfillment process, such as handling fees or insurance costs, and you want to include them in the shipping costs charged to your customers, you can manage them as Additional Fees.

Handling

This setting lets you enter a flat amount – e.g. $10.00 – or a percentage – e.g. 5% – to offset the cost of handling during fulfillment.

Enter flat amounts as a numerical value – e.g. enter ’10’ for a flat amount of $10.00. Using the ‘$’ symbol will result in calculation errors. Enter percentage amounts with the ‘%’ symbol – e.g. enter ‘5%’ for a percentage.

Let’s say you have an average cost of $15.00 to package an order, regardless of quantity or order value. You can cover this cost by entering ’15’ in the ‘Handling’ field after your shipping costs have been set up.

Handling fees are applied before any markup or markdown and are blended into the final shipping cost. They are not identified as ‘Handling’ in a separate line item.

This setting is useful if you want to recover the cost of things like packaging materials or warehouse labor associated with shipping.

Insurance

This setting lets you enter a flat amount – e.g. $10.00 – or a percentage – e.g. 5% – to offset the cost of insurance. You can use the Insurance setting to charge a shipping rate that is based on a percentage of the whole cart value as an alternative to using percentage in your shipping cost, or in situations where you want to add a percentage ‘surcharge’ to an existing flat rate.

Let’s say you have a base shipping rate of $20.00, but you want to add 3% of the customer cart value as a surcharge. To achieve this, you can set up your shipping cost like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 20 ($20.00)
• Per Unit = [leave blank]

Then, you’ll enter ‘3%’ in the Insurance field.

A customer ordering $30.00 worth of products will be charged $20.90 for shipping at checkout – $20.00 for the standard rate, plus $0.90 for the insurance surcharge (3% of $30.00 = $0.90).

A customer ordering $100.00 worth of products will be charged $23.00 for shipping at checkout – $20.00 for the standard rate, plus $3.00 for the insurance surcharge (3% of $100.00 = $3.00).

You can also apply just the Insurance surcharge without a standard shipping cost – meaning, you can have a shipping cost of $0.00 and an Insurance surcharge of 5%.

In this situation, a customer ordering $100.00 worth of products will be charged just $5.00 for shipping at checkout – $0.00 for the standard rate, plus $5.00 for the insurance surcharge (5% of $100.00 = $5.00).

Shipping costs must have a value of ‘0’ or more when applying an Insurance cost as a percentage. If you do not add a shipping cost row, or if you leave the shipping cost field blank, it will result in calculation errors.

Insurance fees are applied after any markup, markdown or handling fee, and are blended into the final shipping cost. They are not identified as ‘Insurance Fees’ in a separate line item.

This setting is useful if you want to charge for insurance or add a surcharge based on a percentage of the cart value.

Blending Handling and Insurance

You can combine the Handling and Insurance fee settings by entering a value in both fields.

Let’s say you have a flat rate of $20.00, but you want to add 25% Handling to each shipping cost to offset the cost of packaging materials and warehouse labor, and you want to apply a surcharge of 10% of the cart value. To achieve this, you can set up your shipping cost like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 20 ($20.00)
• Per Unit = [leave blank]

Then, you’ll enter ‘25%’ in the Handling field and ‘10%’ in the Insurance field.

A customer ordering $50.00 worth of goods will be charged $30.00 for shipping at checkout – $20.00 for the standard rate, plus $5.00 for the Handling (25% of $20.00 = $5.00), plus $5.00 for the Insurance (10% of $50.00 = $5.00).

Order of Calculations

Handling fees are applied first, followed by any markdown or markup. Insurance fees, if any, are applied last.

Let’s say you have a flat-rate cost of $20.00, and for a period of two weeks, you need to apply a 5% markup to offset a temporary fuel surcharge required by your local courier. In addition, you have a 15% Handling fee to cover packaging, and you have your usual 5% Insurance surcharge, where 2% of the cart value is added to the cost of shipping.

A customer ordering $100 worth of products will be charged $26.15 for shipping at checkout, because:

• Your flat rate shipping cost is $20.00
• 15% Handling is applied next; 15% of $20.00 is $3.00 – your shipping cost subtotal before markup and Insurance is $23.00
• 5% Markup is applied next; 5% of $23.00 is $1.15 – your shipping cost subtotal before Insurance is $24.15
• 2% Insurance is applied next; 2% of $100 (the cart value) is $2.00 – your shipping cost total is $26.15

Alternatively, if your Insurance rate was a flat amount (instead of a cart percentage) – e.g. $5.00 – it would be still be applied last. Meaning, $5.00 would be applied to the ‘after markup’ subtotal of $24.15, for a final shipping cost of $29.15.

Rounding The Shipping Cost

If you’re applying percentages to your shipping costs that are resulting in uneven numbers, you can use the Rounding setting to present a clean, even number.

Do Not Round

This setting prevents rounding from occurring. The shipping costs will be presented exactly as they are calculated. This is the default setting.

Up Or Down

This setting allows you to round either up or down, depending on which is closer to the actual result.

Let’s say you’ve set it to round up or down to the nearest $1.00.

A calculated shipping cost of $52.44 will round down to $52.00. A calculated shipping cost of $96.80 will round up to $97.00.

Up

This setting will always round the calculated shipping cost up.

Let’s say you’ve set it to round up to the nearest $5.00.

A calculated shipping cost of $21.50 will round up to $25.00. A calculated shipping cost of $25.50 will round up to $30.00.

Down

This setting will always round the calculated shipping cost down.

Let’s say you’ve set it to round down to the nearest $0.50.

A calculated shipping cost of $39.45 will round down to $39.00. A calculated shipping cost of $59.99 will round down to $59.50.

You can set Rounding to occur as needed to the nearest $0.50, $1.00, $5.00 or $10.00.

Rounding settings are more commonly used with Live Rates (which are frequently calculated as uneven numbers) but are useful if you are applying percentages (Mark Up, Mark Down, Handling, Insurance) which might also result in uneven numbers.

Free Shipping (Optional)

Within each shipping method, you can set a free shipping threshold that will override the actual shipping cost when the customer’s cart meets and/or exceeds the threshold.

Enter free shipping values as a numerical value – e.g. enter ’10’ for $10.00, or ’15’ for 15 lbs. Using the ‘$’ or unit abbreviations (e.g. lbs) will result in calculation errors.

Free shipping values must be greater than 0.

Combined Product Quantity

This setting enables free shipping to trigger when the customer’s cart contains a certain number of items.

Let’s say you’ve set free shipping to activate when the Combined Product Quantity is Greater Than Or Equal To 20 (20 items).

A customer ordering 20 pairs of white socks or more will be offered free shipping at checkout, regardless of the actual shipping cost calculation.

Combined Product Total

This setting lets you set free shipping to trigger when the value of the customer’s cart reaches a certain dollar amount. This is the default setting.

Let’s say you’ve set free shipping to activate when the Combined Product Total is Greater Than 75 ($75.00).

A customer whose order totals $75.30 will be offered free shipping at checkout, regardless of the actual shipping cost calculation.

Combined Product Weight

This setting lets you set free shipping to trigger when the total weight of the items in the customer’s cart reaches a certain amount.

Let’s say you’ve set free shipping to activate when the Combined Product Weight is Less Than Or Equal To 10 (10 lbs).

A customer ordering 9 lbs of rice will be offered free shipping at checkout, regardless of the actual shipping cost calculation.

Greater Than/ Less Than Setting

Each of the Free Shipping Settings above can be set to activate when the indicated value in the customer’s cart – e.g. the total number of items is:

Greater than or equal to the specified amount – it can be the same amount or more.

Less than or equal to the specified amount – it can be the same amount or less.

Equal to the specified amount – it must be exactly the specified amount.

Not Equal to the specified amount – it can be any amount except the specified amount.

Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges (Optional)

If you have products that always cost the same to ship – for example, you offer promotional t-shirts that always ship for free or you sell 80 lb bags of crushed gravel that always cost $45.00 to ship, regardless of what else is in the cart – Intuitive Shipping lets you add custom shipping prices to those products.

You can configure shipping methods for your other products to interact with those custom shipping prices in a few different ways.

ADD per product custom shipping charges (EXCLUDE products from calculation)

This setting lets you add the cost of the custom shipping prices to the other shipping costs calculated by your shipping method. That means products with custom shipping prices are calculated separately and not included in the shipping method calculation.

The custom shipping prices are then added to the final shipping cost at checkout.

Let’s say you’ve set up 80 lb gravel bags with a custom shipping price of $45.00 per bag, regardless of quantity.

For your other items, you’ve selected a calculation method of Cart quantity (the total number of items in the customer’s cart). Your shipping costs are:

• $30.00 up to a cart quantity of 20
• $20.00 up to a cart quantity of 50
• $0.00 with no cart limit (carts that exceed 50 items)

And you’ve set Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges to ‘ADD per product custom shipping charges (EXCLUDE products from calculation)’.

A customer ordering 52 paver stones won’t be charged for shipping at checkout because their order quantity exceeds the limit of the first and second rows, and is within the limit of the third row (which has no limit).

If the customer adds 1 x 80 lb bag of gravel to the same order, they’ll be charged $45.00 for shipping at checkout because the custom shipping charge for the gravel is added to the regular shipping charge for the pavers ($0.00 + $45.00).

However, a customer ordering 50 paver stones and 1 x 80 lb bag of gravel will be charged $65.00 for shipping at checkout, because while their cart actually includes 51 items, the gravel bag has been excluded from the calculation. That means, the shipping method calculation ignores the gravel and only sees 50 paving stones, which meets the limit of the second row. This cost is then added to the custom shipping charge for the gravel ($20.00 + $45.00 = $65.00)

This setting is useful when you need to charge custom shipping prices for unique items, but you do not want them to interact with other cart scenarios.

OVERRIDE shipping method with per product custom shipping charges

This setting lets you charge the cost of the custom shipping prices instead of the shipping costs calculated by your shipping method when products with custom shipping charges are included in the cart.

Let’s say you’ve set up dining room sets to always ship for free. At a selling price of $1899.99, this suite of 8 solid wood chairs and matching dining table is your highest-priced item, and you don’t want customers to have the additional cost burden of paying for shipping.

For your lower-priced items, you’ve selected a calculation method of Cart volume (the total space taken up by the goods in the customer’s cart). Your shipping costs look like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 2 ($2.00)
• Per Unit = 100 (100 in³)(cubic inches)

And you’ve set Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges to ‘OVERRIDE shipping method with per product custom shipping charges’.

A customer ordering a set of bar stools and 2 end tables with a combined volume of 7900 in³ will be charged $158.00 for shipping at checkout (7900/100 = 79 ‘units’; 79 x $2.00 = $158.00).

However, a customer adding the dining suite to their order will not be charged for shipping at checkout because the free custom shipping price for the dining suite has overridden the shipping cost of the other items.

This setting is useful when you want to offer an incentive for customers to add unique or big-ticket items to the rest of their order.

IGNORE per product custom shipping charges (INCLUDE products in calculation)

This setting lets you completely disregard the custom shipping prices in certain checkout situations, and have those products included in a shipping method calculation.

Let’s say your standard shipping cost is a flat rate of $25.00 for all items at any quantity – except cocktail and party dresses from Vendor A. You’ve set those dresses to always have a custom shipping price of $12.00 per dress because of the vendor’s requirements.

But, you’re running a promotion that allows customers who order any 10 or more items from your store to get free shipping, and you want to make sure that Vendor A’s dresses don’t result in unwanted shipping charges.

To prepare for your promotion, you’ve added a whole cart Condition to your general Shipping Scenario so that it only triggers when there are 9 items or less in the cart.

You’ve also created a Duplicate of that same Scenario, but changed the whole cart Condition in your Duplicate to require a cart to have 10 or more items.

In your Duplicate Scenario’s shipping method, you’ve selected a calculation method of Cart quantity, and your shipping cost looks like this:

• Up To = ~ (no limit)
• Shipping Cost = 0 ($0.00)
• Per Unit = [leave blank]

And you’ve set Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges to ‘IGNORE per product custom shipping charges (INCLUDE products in calculation)’.

A customer ordering 2 party dresses made by Vendor A will be charged $24.00 for shipping at checkout ($12.00 custom shipping price per dress).

A customer ordering 1 party dress from Vendor A, plus 3 shirts and 1 pair of pants from other vendors will be charged $37.00 for shipping at checkout because the total number of items is less than 10. That means the order qualifies for your regular flat rate of $25.00, and the custom shipping price for the party dress adds another $12.00 to total shipping cost. ($25.00 + $12.00 = $37.00).

A customer ordering 3 party dresses from Vendor A, plus 3 shirts and 4 pairs of pants from other vendors will not be charged for shipping because the total number of items in the cart is 10 – including the party dresses. That means the order qualifies for free shipping, and the custom shipping prices for the dresses have been ignored.

This setting is useful when you want to ensure that unique items with custom shipping prices can be included in certain Scenarios without negatively impacting the final shipping cost.

BLEND per product custom shipping charges (INCLUDE products from calculation)

This setting lets you combined the cost of the custom shipping prices with the shipping costs calculated by your shipping method, and unlike the ‘Use per product custom shipping charges’ setting, products with custom shipping prices are calculated separately and included in the shipping method calculation.

Let’s use the same example we used earlier in the ‘ADD per product custom shipping charges’ setting to understand how they are different.

As before, you’ve set up 80 lb gravel bags with a custom shipping price of $45.00 per bag.

You’ve again selected a calculation method of Cart quantity (the total number of items in the customer’s cart), and your standard shipping costs are:

• $30.00 up to a cart quantity of 20
• $20.00 up to a cart quantity of 50
• $0.00 with no cart limit (carts that exceed 50 items)

However, this time you’ve set Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges to ‘BLEND per product custom shipping charges (INCLUDE products from calculation)’.

Once again, a customer ordering 52 paver stones won’t be charged for shipping at checkout because their order quantity exceeds the limit of the first two rows and meets the limit of the third row (with no limit).

And again, a customer adding 1 x 80 lb bag of gravel to their order will be charged $45.00 for shipping at checkout because the custom shipping charge for the gravel is added onto the regular shipping cost ($0.00 + $45.00).

However, this time, a customer ordering 50 paver stones and 1 x 80 lb bag of gravel will only be charged $45.00 for shipping at checkout (instead of $65.00) because their actual whole cart includes 51 items – and, the gravel bag has been included in the calculation. That means, the shipping method calculation sees 50 paving stones and 1 bag of gravel (51 items), which meets the limit of the third row (with no limit). This cost is then added to the custom shipping charge for the gravel ($0.00 + $45.00).

The Blend setting also works like this:

Let’s say you have a t-shirt from Vendor B, and you’ve given it a custom shipping price of $5.00.

You’ve also got a shipping method with a standard ‘Per Unit’ rate of $2.00 per item for each item.

And you’ve again set Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges to ‘BLEND per product custom shipping charges (INCLUDE products in calculation)’.

A customer ordering 1 t-shirt from Vendor B and 1 pair of shorts from another vendor will be charged $9.00 for shipping at checkout because the t-shirt has a custom shipping price of $5.00 and because the quantity of the t-shirt has been included in the number of items in the ‘per unit’ calculation (2 total items x $2.00 = $4.00; $4.00 + $5.00 = $9.00).

To compare:

If you were to change ‘BLEND per custom shipping charges’ – which includes products with custom charges in the calculation – back to ‘ADD per custom shipping charges’ – which excludes products with custom shipping prices – a customer placing the same order would only be charged $7.00 for shipping at checkout because the t-shirt has a custom shipping price of $5.00 and because the quantity of the t-shirt has not been included in the number of items in the ‘per unit’ calculation (1 item x $2.00 = $2.00; $2.00 + $5.00 = $7.00).

Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges – Mark Up/ Mark Down

You can also apply a markup or a markdown to your custom shipping prices (as a flat amount – e.g. $10.00 – or as a percentage – e.g. -5%) before they are blended with the shipping method.

Enter flat amounts as a numerical value – e.g. enter ’10’ for a flat amount of $10.00. Using the ‘$’ symbol will result in calculation errors. Enter percentage amounts with the ‘%’ symbol – e.g. enter ‘5%’ for a percentage increase of 5%.

For negative amounts, use the ‘-‘ (dash) – e.g. to enter a markdown of $10.00, enter ‘-10’. To enter a markdown of 5%, enter ‘-5%’.

Let’s use the same example we just used:

You’ve got a custom shipping price of $5.00 for t-shirts from Vendor B, and a shipping method with a ‘Per Unit’ rate of $2.00 per item.

You’ve set Blend Per Product Custom Shipping Charges to ‘BLENDper product custom shipping charges (Include products from calculation)’ and you’ve added a markup of 15% to the custom shipping prices when they’re blended with the your regular rate.

A customer ordering 1 t-shirt from Vendor B and one pair of shorts from another vendor will be charged $9.75 for shipping at checkout, because:

• the t-shirt has a custom shipping price of $5.00
• you’ve added a mark-up of 15% to the custom price ($5.00 + 15% = $5.75)
• the t-shirt and the shorts count as 2 items (2 x $2.00 = $4.00)
• $5.75 + $4.00 = $9.75

Let’s say you’d rather have a markdown of $2.00 in the same scenario – the equivalent of shipping 1 item for free.

A customer ordering 3 t-shirts from Vendor B and 2 pairs of shorts from another vendor will be charged $23.00 for shipping at checkout, because:

• each t-shirt has a custom shipping price of $5.00 (3 x $5.00 = $15.00)
• you’ve added a markdown of -$2.00 to the custom price ($15.00 – $2.00 = $13.00)
• the t-shirts and the shorts count as 5 items (5 x $2.00 = $10.00)
• $13.00 + $10.00 = $23.00

There are a few different ways you can configure your custom shipping prices. One of the more common ways is to apply a custom shipping charge for each unit, such as $10.00 per item. You can also use custom charges to offer free shipping all the time or just for the first item. Alternatively, you can charge the customer for the first item and offer free shipping for each additional item.

To get started:

1) Click Products on the main menu.

2) Click Edit beside the Product that requires custom pricing.

Add Custom Prices For Each Item

This setup is ideal if you want to charge multiples of the same custom shipping price for each unit of the same product – e.g. if the custom shipping price is $5.00 and the customer orders 3 units, they’ll be charged $15.00 for shipping for that product.

For alternative ways to set custom shipping prices by product, go to Alternative Custom Pricing Options.

1) In the Shipping Zone Settings (Optional) section, add the custom price – e.g. ‘5.00‘ ($5.00) under both the Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity columns for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Grayed-out numbers displayed in the price fields prior to adding your custom prices are placeholders for example only. They are not actual values.

Be sure to enter numerical values only. The ‘$’ symbol is not required and may result in errors if used.

Variants

If the Product has Variants, you can add custom prices to each variant individually. This is useful if some – but not all – of your variants have custom shipping prices, or if one or more variants has different shipping prices.

If all variants have the same custom shipping prices, you only need to enter the prices in the main (parent) product listing (see above). If custom shipping prices are different by variant, use the Variant settings instead.

1) Click Show Variants.

2) For each applicable Variant, add the custom price – e.g. ‘5.00‘ ($5.00) under both the Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity columns for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Alternative Custom Pricing Options

You can use the fields for Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity to manage alternative shipping strategies.

Always Free

If you always want a product to have free shipping regardless of quantity:

1) In the Shipping Zone Settings (Optional) section, enter 0.00 only under the Custom Shipping First Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. Leave the Custom Shipping Additional Quantity column blank. If free shipping is not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Grayed-out numbers displayed in the price fields prior to adding your custom prices are placeholders for example only. They are not actual values.

Be sure to enter numerical values only. The ‘$’ symbol is not required and may result in errors if used.

Variants

If the Product has Variants, you can add 0.00 to each variant individually. This is useful if some – but not all – of your variants are always free to ship, while the others have paid custom shipping charges – e.g. $5.00 – or don’t have any custom charges (leave them blank).

If all variants have the same custom shipping prices, you only need to enter the prices in the main (parent) product listing (see above). If custom shipping prices are different by variant, use the Variant settings instead.

1) Click Show Variants.

2) For each Variant that has free shipping charges, enter 0.00 only under the Custom Shipping First Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. First Item Is Free, Charge For Additional Items

If you want the first item to have free shipping and then charge another amount – e.g. $5.00 – to ship each additional item, you can use both Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity columns.

1) In the Shipping Zone Settings (Optional) section, enter 0.00 under the Custom Shipping First Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If free shipping is not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Grayed-out numbers displayed in the price fields prior to adding your custom prices are placeholders for example only. They are not actual values.

Be sure to enter numerical values only. The ‘$’ symbol is not required and may result in errors if used.

2) Enter the paid amount – e.g. 5.00 – under the Custom Shipping Additional Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Prices added to the ‘Additional Quantity’ column will not work if the ‘First Quantity’ column in the same Shipping Zone is blank.

This configuration means your customer will be not be charged for the first item but will be charged $5.00 per item for each additional item – e.g. if the customer orders 3 shirts, their shipping cost will be $10.00 for that product (free for the first item, $5.00 each for the second and third items).

Variants

If the Product has Variants, you can add 0.00 to the Custom Shipping First Quantity column and a paid amount to the Custom Shipping Additional Quantity column for each variant individually. This is useful if some – but not all – of your variants are always free for the first item and have a paid amount for each additional item, or if one or more variants has different custom charges.

1) Click Show Variants.

If all variants have the same custom shipping prices, you only need to enter the prices in the main (parent) product listing (see above). If custom shipping prices are different by variant, use the Variant settings instead.

Charge For the First Item, Additional Items Are Free

If you want the charge an amount for the first item – e.g. $5.00 – and have free shipping for each additional item, you can use both Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity columns.

1) In the Shipping Zone Settings (Optional) section, enter the paid amount – e.g. 5.00 – under the Custom Shipping First Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Grayed-out numbers displayed in the price fields prior to adding your custom prices are placeholders for example only. They are not actual values.

Prices added to the ‘Additional Quantity’ column will not work if the ‘First Quantity’ column in the same Shipping Zone is blank.

This configuration means your customer will be charged $5.00 to ship the first item, and will not be charged for any additional items – e.g. if the customer orders 1 shirt, their shipping cost will be $5.00 for that product. If they order 3 shirts, their shipping cost will still be $5.00 for that product.

Variants

If the Product has Variants, you can add a paid amount to the Custom Shipping First Quantity column and 0.00 to the Custom Shipping Additional Quantity column for each variant individually. This is useful if some – but not all – of your variants always have a paid custom shipping charge for the first item and are free for each additional item, or if one or more variants has different custom charges.

Charge Different Custom Prices For First and Additional Items

If you want the charge one amount for the first item – e.g. $5.00 – and a different amount for each additional item – e.g. $7.50, you can use both Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity columns.

1) In the Shipping Zone Settings (Optional) section, enter the paid amount for the first item – e.g. 5.00 – under the Custom Shipping First Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Grayed-out numbers displayed in the price fields prior to adding your custom prices are placeholders for example only. They are not actual values.

Be sure to enter numerical values only. The ‘$’ symbol is not required and may result in errors if used.

2) Enter the paid amount for additional items – e.g. 7.50 – under the Custom Shipping Additional Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Prices added to the ‘Additional Quantity’ column will not work if the ‘First Quantity’ column in the same Shipping Zone is blank.

This configuration means your customer will be charged $5.00 to ship the first item, and $7.50 for each additional item – e.g. if the customer orders 1 shirt, their shipping cost will be $7.50 for that product. If they order 3 shirts, their shipping cost will be $20.00 for that product ($5.00 + $7.50 + $7.50).

To create more than two levels of custom pricing based on products, you will need to create a Custom Shipping Method with a rate table based on product quantity.

Variants

If the Product has Variants, you can add different paid amounts to both the Custom Shipping First Quantity and Custom Shipping Additional Quantity columns for each variant individually. This is useful if some – but not all – of your variants always have one custom shipping charge for the first item and a different custom shipping charge for each additional item, or if one or more variants have different custom charges.

1) Click Show Variants.

If all variants have the same custom shipping prices, you only need to enter the prices in the main (parent) product listing (see above). If custom shipping prices are different by variant, use the Variant settings instead.

2) For each Variant that has a paid shipping charge for the first item, enter the amount – e.g. 5.00 – only under the Custom Shipping First Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

3) For the same Variants, enter a different paid amount – e.g. 7.50 – under the Custom Shipping Additional Quantity column for each Shipping Zone the Product will ship to. If custom prices are not required for every Shipping Zone, leave those Zones blank.

Save Your Settings

Add Custom Shipping Prices To More Products

1) Repeat the steps above for any of the options to add custom shipping prices to other products.

Blend Custom Shipping Prices With Shipping Methods

Once you have configured all of your per-product custom shipping prices, you can select how those charges will be blended with rates from your other Shipping Methods.

By default, Intuitive Shipping adds custom shipping prices to the final shipping cost. Let’s say you have a product with a custom shipping price of $5.00 per item. You also have a Live Rate Shipping Method set up to calculate shipping for other products. A customer orders a mix of other products that result in a live shipping rate from the carrier of $25.16. The customer then adds 3 items with custom shipping charges to the cart. Their final shipping cost at checkout is $40.16 ($25.16 + $5.00 + $5.00 + $5.00).

Alternatively, you can change the blending settings to have the custom shipping charges ignored when other products are in the cart. For example, if the customer orders just the product with custom shipping charges, they pay $15.00 ($5.00 x 3) at checkout. But, if they add one or more products that use standard shipping rates, the custom shipping price is ignored and everything in the cart uses standard shipping rates.

Or, you can change the blending settings to do the opposite. Let’s say you have a bulky product with a custom freight charge of $250.00 for the first item only. A customer orders a mix of products that result in a live shipping rate from a carrier of $25.16. The customer then adds one item with the custom freight charge to the cart. Their final shipping cost at checkout is just $250.00 (the $25.16 is overridden by the custom charge; it is not blended).

With Intuitive Shipping, you can easily create a Shipping Method that applies a signature fee to your Live Rates. You can create a new Signature Required Shipping Method from scratch by following the steps below, or you can skip ahead to learn how to copy an existing Shipping Method and simply add the fee to the rate, allowing your customers the option to choose one or the other.

Add A New Signature Required Shipping Method

If you don’t currently have a Shipping Method that can be copied, or if you prefer to offer only a ‘Signature Required’ Shipping method instead of an option, you can create a new one from scratch.

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Click Edit beside an existing Scenario or click the Add Shipping Scenario button to Create A Shipping Scenario.

3) In the Shipping Methods section at the bottom of the Edit Shipping Scenario page, click Add Shipping Method beside the applicable Shipping Zone – e.g. ‘USA’.

Shipping Zones are set up in your Shopify Settings. To learn how to adjust your Shipping Zones, click here.

4) Create a Title for your Shipping Method – e.g. ‘FedEx Ground Signature’.

5) Enter a Description that will help your customers understand that a signature is required – e.g. ‘Signature required upon delivery’.

Select The Shipping Calculation Method

1) In the Calculate Shipping Based On section, choose the desired Shipping Carrier from the Live Rates section of the drop-down list. For a list of which Shipping Carriers are supported by Intuitive Shipping, click here. For this example, we’ll select FedEx.

Set the Shipping Origin Address

1) In the Ship From Location section, select whether your location will be the one provided by Shopify or if you will define a custom ship from location.

2) If you selected Define a custom ship from location in Step 1, the Custom Ship From Location section will appear on the screen. Enter the Country and Postal/ ZIP Code for your custom location in this section.

Enter The Delivery Method

1) In the Delivery Methods section, select the applicable delivery methods provided by your preferred carrier. For this example, we’ll select FedEx Ground.

Signature charges may vary depending on the delivery method. Be sure to confirm the correct fee with your preferred carrier.

Add Fallback Cost (Optional)

The Carrier Service Fallback Rate allows you to set up a flat, fallback shipping rate that is displayed to your customer in the event that the rate request sent to the carrier times out.

Carrier Service fallback Rates do not appear if carrier rates fail for any reason other than a request time out.

For example, if rates fail due to an error with account credentials or if the order exceeds the carrier’s size restrictions, the Carrier Service Fallback Rate will not be displayed.

If you do not want a fallback rate to appear, leave this section blank. If blank, and carrier rates time out, the customer will be shown the default error message at checkout.

Enter Package Details

1) In the Packages section, select how you would like your packages to be split – e.g. by Cart Weight. Learn more about splitting packages here.

2) Click the Add Another Package button for each package.

3) Enter the Up To value that will be used to determine when packages will be split.

The unit of measure for the Up To value is determined by the Split Packages Based On setting.

4) Enter the Length (or Depth), Width and Height dimensions for your first package.

5) If desired, enter a value for the Empty Weight of the package. When present, this weight will be added to the total weight of the products in the package.

6) Repeat Steps 1 to 5 to add as many packages as you need.

When splitting packages based on the SmartBoxing™ packing system, Intuitive Shipping supports up to 40 package sizes.

Carrier Settings (Optional)

1) If you have an account with one of our carrier partners, enter your account credentials to access your negotiated rates.

Most carriers do not require an account to access rates. If you do not have an account with a carrier, leave the Carrier Settings blank. When the Shipping Method is triggered, rates will be calculated using the carriers’ standard retail rates when possible.

Carrier account credential requirements vary by carrier. Settings fields will be different depending on which carrier you selected.

Adjust Final Shipping Costs

1) Under Mark Up/ Mark Down, enter the carrier’s flat fee to be applied to the final shipping cost – e.g. ‘5.75’ to mark up the final shipping cost by $5.75.

2) Adjust the other Optional settings as needed.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Copy From An Existing Shipping Method

Alternatively, you quickly make a copy of an existing standard, ‘no signature’ shipping method, then add the flat fee to the copy.

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Click Edit beside one of your existing Shipping Scenarios. For this example, we’ll make a copy of FedEx Ground and edit the settings required to make it ‘Signature Required’.

3) In the Shipping Methods section at the bottom of the Edit Shipping Scenario page, click Copy beside the standard ‘no signature’ Shipping Method you wish to copy and edit.

4) Click the same Shipping Zone where your original Shipping Method exists – e.g ‘USA’.

5) Click Edit beside one of the copies of the Shipping Method.

The copied version is identical to the original in every way until it is edited, so it does not matter which copy you edit. Editing one version will not affect the other Shipping Method.

6) Edit the Title of your Shipping Method to distinguish it from the original – e.g. ‘FedEx Ground Signature’.

7) Edit or add a Description that will help your customers understand that a ‘Signature Required’ option is available – e.g. ‘Signature required upon delivery’.

Adjust Final Shipping Costs

All of the settings for the newly copied Shipping Method are the same as the original until manually edited.

1) Under Mark Up/ Mark Down, enter the carrier’s flat fee to be applied to the final shipping cost – e.g. ‘5.75’ to mark up the final shipping cost by $5.75.

Signature charges may vary depending on the delivery method. Be sure to confirm the correct fee with your preferred carrier.

2) Adjust the other Optional settings if required.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

You will now see two (2) Shipping Methods displayed in the Shipping Zone, one for no signature and one for ‘Signature Required’. When the Conditions of the Scenario are met, both options will be displayed to the customer at checkout.

Shopify’s Shipping Profiles feature lets you create custom profiles for products with unique shipping requirements, such as fragile items or products shipping from different locations. Custom profiles can be combined with or excluded from shipments with general products.

Within each Shopify profile, you can assign one or more Shipping Zones – the geographical areas you ship to, such as country or a group of territories, provinces or states. If you’re using multiple profiles – meaning your General profile plus at least one custom profile – you may have the same shipping zones in each Profile. For example, both your General Profile and your Fragile Products Profile might have separate Zones for ‘United States’ and ‘Canada’.

To ensure that Intuitive Shipping is calculating rates accurately, we strongly recommend having only one (1) General Profile in your Shopify settings.

Intuitive Shipping will work best when you use one (1) general profile and remove all of your custom profiles.

When you delete a custom profile, any products assigned to it will automatically be returned to your General profile.

Remove Custom Profiles

To ensure Intuitive Shipping is calculating rates properly, we encourage you to remove all custom profiles, leaving only your default General profile.

1) Click on Shopify Settings at the bottom of the sidebar menu.

2) Click on Shipping and delivery on the Settings menu.

3) In the Shipping section, click Manage rates beside a custom profile, such as ‘Fragile Products’.

4) Scroll to the bottom, then click the Delete profile button. Any products associated with the deleted Profile will automatically be added back to your default General profile.

5) Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to remove each additional custom Shipping Profile.

What Are The Risks of Using Custom Profiles?

Shopify automatically adds Intuitive Shipping as a Carrier service to your General Profile when you install the app. When you create additional custom profiles, you have the option to add Intuitive Shipping as a carrier service (rate provider) or use other services, such as accessing Shopify’s discounted carrier rates.

When you have multiple profiles, whether you’re using Intuitive Shipping as a carrier service in one profile – general or custom – or multiple profiles, you may experience rate calculation errors.

Intuitive Shipping In One Profile

When Intuitive Shipping is set up as a carrier service in just one of your profiles and a customer orders products from multiple profiles, Intuitive Shipping will only calculate shipping rates for the products in the profile it is associated with.

Let’s say you have three different profiles – General, Clothing and Fragile, but you’ve only set up Intuitive Shipping as a rate provider for your General profile. Intuitive Shipping can only calculate rates for products in the profile it is assigned to. That means, Intuitive Shipping will only calculate shipping for products in your General profile, even if a customer orders products from other profiles on the same order.

For example, you may be using Intuitive Shipping to provide conditional free shipping where a customer must order more than $75.00 worth of products to qualify for free shipping. A customer might order a $60.00 product from your General profile, where Intuitive Shipping is a rate provider, along with a $20.00 product from your Clothing profile, where our system isn’t calculating rates. Your customer should be entitled to free shipping because they have ordered $80.00 worth of products. However, because Intuitive Shipping only sees the products in the General profile, our system assumes the customer only ordered $60.00 worth of products and is therefore not entitled to free shipping.

Unfortunately, while adding Intuitive Shipping as a rate provider to the other two profiles will resolve this issue, it creates another one.

Intuitive Shipping In Multiple Profiles

When you assign Intuitive Shipping to all three profiles, shipping rates may be duplicated or multiplied depending on the customer’s order. And, if you’re using free shipping thresholds, it may result in only partial free shipping.

Let’s use the same example as above. You have three Shopify profiles – one for General, one for Clothing and one for Fragile products. In this case, you’ve set up Intuitive Shipping as a rate provider for all three profiles. 

In Intuitive Shipping, you’ve got a single, standard Scenario with no conditions, and you’re charging a flat rate of $15.00, but you’ve got a free shipping threshold of $75.00. When a customer orders a $60.00 product from you General profile along with a $20.00 product from your clothing profile, not only will they not be eligible for free shipping – for the same reason explained in the section above – but they’ll be charged $30.00 for shipping at checkout. That’s because Shopify sends us a separate sub-cart for each product’s profile. Each sub-cart is charged your flat rate of $15.00 (because neither sub-cart meets the free shipping threshold), then Shopify blends the two rates together at checkout for a total of $30.00.

Not only has your customer missed out on free shipping, they’ve been charged double your standard shipping rate.

If a customer increases their order – let’s say they buy two (2) $60.00 products from General (for a sub-total of $120.00), plus the $20.00 product from clothing, they’ll still be charged $15.00 for shipping at checkout. That’s because only the products from General meet the free shipping threshold. In order for the customer to get free shipping for the entire order, they must order at least $75.00 worth of products from each profile.

You Don’t Need Multiple Profiles

Because of the way that Profiles are configured, there is no workaround for Intuitive Shipping and no way to avoid the risk of calculation errors except to remove your additional custom profiles.

That’s okay! Shipping Profiles were introduced to give Shopify merchants more flexibility and more customization with shipping rates. Thankfully, Intuitive Shipping is so powerful and robust that you can do everything Profiles was intended to do with Scenarios – and much more!

Intuitive Shipping Scenarios work similarly to Profiles but give you even greater control and flexibility. You can set up product-based rates that blend rates together when a customer orders multiple product types, or you can set up a dominant Scenario that overrides other Scenarios when a certain product is in the cart. You can even use Scenarios to create tiered shipping costs based on multiple cart scenarios.

If rates aren’t being calculated or displayed by Intuitive Shipping, here are some things you can do to troubleshoot.

Check For Errors

It is possible that rates are not being calculated or displayed due to an error. To see if recent shipping calculations are resulting in errors check Warnings & Errors.

1) Click Settings on the main menu.

2) Scroll down to the Warnings & Errors section.

3) Review the error messages. If there are no recent error messages, continue to the next troubleshooting step. If a recent error is displayed and you are unsure why or you’re not sure what it means, please contact us or submit a support request through the app.

The most recent error messages are displayed at the bottom of the list. You may need to scroll down to see the most recent error.

Live Support appointment requests and email support requests can be submitted directly through the app. Click Support on the main menu.

Check Visibility Settings

Intuitive Shipping lets your control the general visibility of your entire setup as well as the visibility of individual Shipping Scenarios. Here’s how to check both.

Check General Visibility Settings

After you activate your account, you can hide Intuitive Shipping from your customers to conduct any last-minute or emergency testing on your Scenarios. Once your testing is finished, you will need to turn visibility on for Intuitive Shipping to display rates to your customers.

1) Click Dashboard on the main menu.

2) Check the top of the Activity Dashboard for the yellow warning banner titled ‘Intuitive Shipping is Currently Off’.

3) If the banner is displayed, click Settings on the main menu.

4) In the General section, confirm that Visibility is set to On (green). If Visibility is On, skip ahead to Check Shipping Scenario Visibility Settings. Otherwise, continue to Step 5.

5) If Visibility is Off (green), click On to toggle the setting.

6) Click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page to save your Visibility settings.

Check Shipping Scenario Visibility Settings

Each Shipping Scenario in Intuitive Shipping has its own Visibility setting. By default, Visibility is set to On when you Create A Shipping Scenario. However, Scenario Visibility can be toggled on and off manually, so it’s possible that Visibility was turned off in error or left off inadvertently.

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Check the current Visibility setting for each of your Shipping Scenarios. Under the Visibility heading, either ‘On‘ or ‘Off‘ is displayed beside each Scenario.

‘Off’ is displayed in red text.

3) If a Scenario is set to Off, but you want it to be visible, click Edit beside the Scenario.

4) Toggle the Visibility setting to On (green).

5) Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit Shipping Scenario page to save your Visibility settings.

6) Repeat Steps 1 to 5 for each Scenario that needs to be made visible.

Check Shopify Settings

Shopify automatically adds Intuitive Shipping to your General Profile as a Carrier Service when you install the app. If you removed Intuitive Shipping from your General Profile you will need to add Intuitive Shipping again through your Shopify Settings.

1) Click Settings at the bottom of the left sidebar in your Shopify store.

2) Click on Shipping and delivery.

3) Click Manage rates beside General Shipping Rates in the Shipping section at the top of the page.

4) Confirm that all of your Shipping Zones have Intuitive Shipping listed as a rate provider.

If all of your Shipping Zones do have Intuitive Shipping as a rate provider, you can also check to ensure that Future Services is enabled. To do this, skip ahead to Check Future Services Settings. Otherwise, continue to Step 5.

5) For any Shipping Zones that do not have Intuitive Shipping listed, click the Add rate button.

6) In the Add rate popup box, select Use carrier or app to calculate rates

7) Select Intuitive Shipping (Rates provided by app) from the drop-down list.

8) Ensure that the check box under Future Services is checked.

If this box is not checked, Intuitive Shipping will still calculate rates, and they will appear in the Activity Dashboard, but they will not be displayed to your customers at checkout.

9) Click the Done button to save your settings.

10) Repeat Steps 1 to 9 to add Intuitive Shipping as a Carrier Service to each Shipping Zone in your General Profile.

Check Future Services Settings

If you confirmed that all of your Shipping Zones include Intuitive Shipping as a rate provider, you can still check to ensure that the Future Services box is checked.

When Future Services is not enabled, Intuitive Shipping will still calculate rates, and they will appear in the Activity Dashboard, but they will not be displayed to your customers at checkout.

1) Under any Shipping Zone, click the three dots beside Intuitive Shipping (Rates provided by app).

2) Click Edit Rate on the drop-down list.

3) Ensure that the check box under Future Services is checked. If it isn’t, add a checkmark.

4) Click the Done button to leave or save your settings.

5) Repeat Steps 1 to 4 for each Shipping Zone.

Enable Carrier-calculated Shipping

Shopify requires the third-party Carrier-calculated Shipping Rates feature to be enabled in your Shopify settings when using any third-party shipping calculation app, including Intuitive Shipping – even if you’re not using live rates from a carrier – e.g. Fed Ex, USP. If third-party rates are not enabled, you will see a red warning banner on the Intuitive Shipping dashboard.

Shopify’s Carrier-calculated Shipping Rates feature is required to us Intuitive Shipping, even while you’re in Testing Mode.

1) Click Dashboard on the main menu.

2) Check the top of the Activity Dashboard for the red warning banner titled ‘Third-Party Calculated Shipping Rates’.

3) If the red banner is displayed, contact Shopify.

Check Carrier-Calculated Rates Status in Shopify

In some rare cases, the red banner is not displayed, even though the Carrier-calculated shipping rates feature is not enabled. If the red banner is not displayed on the Activity Dashboard, you can also verify your Carrier-calculated Shipping Rates status in your Shopify Settings.

1) Click Settings at the bottom of the left sidebar in your Shopify store.

2) Click on Shipping and delivery.

3) Scroll to the bottom of the Shipping and delivery page.

4) In the Carrier accounts and fulfillment services section, click on Manage integrations.

Manage integrations may not be displayed on your Shipping and delivery page.

Instead, your Carrier accounts and Custom order fulfillment settings may be accessible directly from the Shipping and delivery page.

5) In either situation, If you are prompted to Enable third-party calculate rates at checkout on the screen, the feature has not yet been enabled.

If you do not see this prompt displayed, the feature is already enabled. Skip to the next section and continue reading this guide to resume troubleshooting.

6) To enable this feature, click the Upgrade your plan button and follow the instructions provided. Or, click Learn more to be taken to the Shopify Help Center.

Enabling third-party calculated rates at checkout is a Shopify requirement if you are using any third-party rate calculator, including Intuitive Shipping, even if you’re not planning to connect Intuitive Shipping to a live rate carrier – e.g. FedEx, UPS. The feature is USD $20.00 per month if you are on the ‘Basic’ or ‘Shopify’ plans. If you change your plan to annual billing, Shopify will add the feature at no additional cost – and they will discount your plan by 10%.

If you change your Shopify billing plan to annual billing, you must still contact Shopify to have the Carrier-Calculated Rates feature enabled.

It is not enabled automatically.

If you are on the ‘Advanced’ plan or higher, the feature is already included with your plan and enabled. No further action is required.
