Condition Groups is one of Intuitive Shipping’s most commonly used features, primarily because it is used to create Postal code or Zip code sub-zones. This feature allows you to create shipping zones that can’t otherwise be set up directly in Shopify, such as counties and geographic regions in the United Kingdom. For example, you may only ship within London and surrounding areas, or you may want to exclude shipping to customers in the Scottish Highlands.

With Intuitive Shipping, you can exclude specific regions in the UK by setting up postcode sub-zones. This guide will explain how to set up sub-zones within the UK, and provide you with cut-and-paste postcode ranges to save you the time of entering them manually.

Find a complete list of postcode ranges by country and county at the bottom of this article.

Add A Sub-zone Condition Group

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Condition Groups from the drop-down list.

2) Click the Add Condition Group Button.

3) Enter a Condition Group Title – e.g. Isle of Wight.

Condition Group Titles are not visible to customers, so name them something that can be easily identified when you set up your Shipping Scenario later.

4) Under Condition Match, select All Conditions Below Must Be Satisfied.

5) Click the Add Another Condition button.

6) Click the Condition field, then select Postal Code/ Zip Code under the Customer Conditions section.

7) Set the Condition logic to Equals.

8) Enter the postcode range – e.g. PO301AB:PO410ZN, then select UK postal code format from the drop-down list below the range.

A range is two postcodes (the first in the range and the last in the range) separated by a : colon symbol, without any spaces.

You can enter multiple individual postcodes, multiple ranges or a combination of the two on a single line using a comma to separate each individual postcode or range.

For example, you can enter PO301AB:PO301ZQ, PO303AA:PO304QU – two ranges separated by comma – as a single value for the Condition.

UK postal code format requires that you input the full postcode without spaces in Step 8 – e.g. AB10AF:AB19YB (instead of ‘AB1 0AF:AB1 9YB’). Learn more about formatting postal codes in Intuitive Shipping here.

Unlike many other international postal codes, UK postcodes cannot be abbreviated within Intuitive Shipping. That’s because an abbreviation such as ‘SE1’ would inadvertently include postcodes that begin ‘SE10’ which is a different area of London than ‘SE1’.

An error message will be displayed if the format is entered incorrectly.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button to save your Sub-zone Condition Group!

Add More Sub-zone Condition Groups

1) Repeat Steps 1 to 8 from Add A Sub-zone Condition Group to create any additional UK sub-zones.

You can create as many Sub-zone Condition Groups as you need and name them whatever you like.

Add Sub-zone To A Shipping Scenario

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Create a new Shipping Scenario or edit an existing Scenario.

3) If creating a new Scenario, set Visibility to On.

When Visibility is set to Off, Shipping Methods from this Scenario will only be visible when you use the customer name ‘Intuitive Shipping’ at checkout. Learn more about Visibility settings here.

4) If creating a new Scenario, enter the Shipping Scenario Title – e.g. Isle of Wight.

You do not need to name the Scenario after the Condition Group Sub-zone. For example, if your Scenario has other Conditions besides the Condition Group Sub-zone – e.g. the ‘Entire Cart is Greater than or equals 100’ (£100), it may make sense to reference the other Condition in the title – e.g. ‘Free Shipping over £100’.

The Shipping Scenario Title is not visible to customers, but it helps keep you organized within the Intuitive Shipping app.

Set The Sub-zone Condition

1) Leave the settings under Condition Match, Product Filtering, and Advanced Options on their Default settings.

2) In the Conditions section, click the Add Another Condition button.

3) Click the Condition field. Then from the list of options, select your newly created sub-zone under the Conditions Group section.

Conditions groups are located near the bottom of the Conditions drop-down list.

4) Set the Condition logic to Equals or Does Not Equal.

Select Equals if customers with postcodes in this sub-zone are eligible for shipping rates from this Scenario.

Select Does Not Equal if customers with postcodes in this sub-zone are ineligible for shipping rates from this Scenario.

5) Set the Value to True.

6) If desired, repeat Steps 3 to 5 to add more excluded – i.e. ‘Does not equal’ – sub-zones to the Scenario.

For example, if you created two (2) Sub-zone Condition Groups – Isle of Wight, and Northern Ireland – and customers from both sub-zones are ineligible for shipping rates, you can add two conditions:

Isle of Wight Does Not Equal True

Northern Ireland Does Not Equal True

We recommend against having multiple included Sub-zone Condition Groups where more than one sub-zone equals ‘True’.

That’s because a customer’s address would have to be included in every sub-zone for the Scenario to work correctly.

Alternatively, we recommend creating separate Scenarios for each included – i.e. ‘Equals’ – Sub-zone Condition Group, especially if you have other Conditions in the Scenario. See Add More Sub-zone Scenarios below.

Using the same example as above, if you want to include shipping rates to both Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland, add ‘Isle of Wight Equals True‘ to one Scenario, then add ‘Northern Ireland Equals True‘ to another Scenario.

Add A Shipping Method

If your Scenario already includes Shipping Methods and you don’t need to make any changes, skip ahead to Add More Sub-zone Scenarios.

1) In the Shipping Methods section, click Add Shipping Method beside your United Kingdom (UK) Shipping Zone which includes the sub-zones being referenced in this Scenario.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Add More Sub-zone Scenarios

You can create a separate Scenario for each sub-zone if required. To simplify the process, you can make a Duplicate of your first Scenario, then make minor adjustments to the Condition and Shipping Methods, rather than creating a new Scenario from scratch.

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Click Edit beside your original Scenario – e.g. Isle of Wight (or whatever title you chose to give your original Scenario).

3) Click the Duplicate button in the top right. This will create an exact copy of the original Scenario, including any Shipping Methods.

4) Confirm Visibility is set to On.

5) Change the Shipping Scenario Title from ‘Copy of [your original title]’ to a new title – e.g. Northern Ireland. As with the original, you can name your Duplicate Scenario anything. You do not need to reference the sub-zone specifically.

The Shipping Scenario Title is not visible to customers, but it helps keep you organized within the Intuitive Shipping app.

Update The Shipping Methods

When you created a Duplicate of the original Scenario, it included exact copies of the Shipping Methods you added to the original.

For your Duplicate Scenarios, you may wish to add new Shipping Methods from scratch, remove Shipping Methods that don’t apply or edit an existing Shipping Method to make minor adjustments – e.g. the Shipping Cost.

Shipping Methods should only be added to Shipping Zones that include the UK postcodes in the Sub-zone Condition Group.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Postcode Ranges by County

To make it easier for you to set up Sub-zones as Condition Groups, here is a list of postcode ranges by UK Country and county.

To add a set of ranges for a specific county to your Condition Group, copy and paste the entire string of ranges below the county name into the Condition Value field (see Add A Sub-zone Condition Group Step 8).

If you are adding more than one county to a single Condition Group, be sure to add a comma between each string of ranges.

For example, if you want to add both Bedforshire and Birkshire to a single Condition Group, make sure you add a comma between ‘SG54XA’ – the last postcode in Bedforshire – and ‘GU470AB’ – the first postcode in Birkshire.

Intuitive Shipping lets you use Postal Codes or Zip Codes to restrict shipping or offer exclusive shipping options to regions that can’t be set up as their own Shipping Zone, such as UK countries.

We recommend creating sub-zones using our Condition Groups feature instead of adding multiple postal codes directly to a Shipping Scenario. This allows you to easily reference the sub-zone in multiple Scenarios as needed.

If you are a UK-based store shipping domestically, or if you ship only to certain parts of the UK, we recommend using this more detailed guide about setting up UK Postcode Sub-zones.

Add A Sub-zone Condition Group

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Condition Groups from the drop-down list.

2) Click the Add Condition Group Button.

3) Enter a Condition Group Title – e.g. Zone 1.

Condition Group Titles are not visible to customers, so name them something that can be easily identified when you set up your Shipping Scenario later.

4) Under Condition Match, select All Conditions Below Must Be Satisfied.

5) Click the Add Another Condition button.

6) Click the Condition field, then select Postal Code/ Zip Code under the Customer Conditions section.

7) Set the Condition logic to Equals.

8) Enter the Postal Code/ Zip Code range – e.g. 100:300.

You can enter multiple ranges using a comma to separate each range – e.g. 100:300, 400:600, 700:900.

Zip codes and non-UK postal codes can be abbreviated without their suffixes. For example, if you want to create a sub-zone for Downtown Toronto, you can enter the postal code range as M5A:M5V instead of M5A0A1:M5V9G9.

Alternatively, you can enter a series of individual postal codes separated by commas – e.g. 10110, 10112, 10115 – or a mix of individual postal codes and ranges – e.g. 10110, 10112:10115, 10117.

9) Select the Postal Code format.

When selecting UK postal code format, you must input the full postcode without spaces in Step 8 – e.g. AB10AA:AB99ZZ. Learn more about formatting postal codes in Intuitive Shipping here.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button to save your Sub-zone Condition Group!

Add More Sub-zone Condition Groups

1) Repeat Steps 1 to 9 from Add A Sub-zone Condition Group to create any additional sub-zones.

You can create as many Sub-zone Condition Groups as you need.

Add Sub-zone To A Shipping Scenario

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Create a new Shipping Scenario or edit an existing Scenario.

3) If creating a new Scenario, set Visibility to On.

When Visibility is set to Off, Shipping Methods from this Scenario will only be visible when you use the customer name ‘Intuitive Shipping’ at checkout. Learn more about Visibility settings here.

4) If creating a new Scenario, enter the Shipping Scenario Title – e.g. Zone 1. You can name the Scenario after a Sub-zone Condition Group or you can enter a different title.

The Shipping Scenario Title is not visible to customers, but it helps keep you organized within the Intuitive Shipping app.

Set The Sub-zone Condition

1) Leave the settings under Condition Match, Product Filtering, and Advanced Options on their Default settings.

2) In the Conditions section, click the Add Another Condition button.

3) Click the Condition field. Then from the list of options, select your newly created sub-zone under the Conditions Group section.

Conditions groups are located near the bottom of the drop-down list.

4) Set the Condition logic to Equals or Does Not Equal.

Select Equals if customers with postal codes in this sub-zone are eligible for shipping rates from this Scenario.

Select Does Not Equal if customers with postal codes in this sub-zone are ineligible for shipping rates from this Scenario.

5) Set the Value to True.

6) If desired, repeat Steps 3 to 5 to add more excluded sub-zones to the Scenario.

For example, if you created two (2) Sub-zone Condition Groups – Zone 1, and Zone 2 – and customers from both Zones are ineligible for shipping rates, you can add two conditions:

Zone 1 Does Not Equal True

Zone 2 Does Not Equal True

We recommend against having multiple included Sub-zone Condition Groups, where more than one Zone equals ‘True’.

That’s because a customer’s address would have to be included in every sub-zone for the Scenario to work correctly.

Alternatively, we recommend creating separate Scenarios for each included Sub-zone Condition Group. See Add More Sub-zone Scenarios below.

Add A Shipping Method

If your Scenario already includes Shipping Methods and you don’t need to make any changes, skip ahead to Add More Sub-zone Scenarios.

1) In the Shipping Methods section, click Add Shipping Method beside a Shipping Zone that includes the sub-zones referenced in this Scenario.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!

Add More Sub-zone Scenarios

You can create a separate Scenario for each sub-zone. To simplify the process, you can make a Duplicate of your first Scenario, then make minor adjustments to the Condition and Shipping Methods, rather than creating a new Scenario from scratch.

1) Click Shipping on the main menu, then select Scenarios from the drop-down list.

2) Click Edit beside your Zone 1 Scenario (or whatever title you chose to give your original Scenario).

3) Click the Duplicate button in the top right. This will create an exact copy of the Zone 1 Scenario, including any Shipping Methods.

4) Confirm Visibility is set to On.

5) Change the Shipping Scenario Title from ‘Copy of [your original title]’ to a new title – e.g. Zone 2. As with the original, you can name your Duplicate Scenario anything.

The Shipping Scenario Title is not visible to customers, but it helps keep you organized within the Intuitive Shipping app.

Update The Shipping Methods

When you created a Duplicate of the original Scenario, it included exact copies of the Shipping Methods you added to the original.

For your Duplicate Scenarios, you may wish to add new Shipping Methods from scratch, remove Shipping Methods that don’t apply or edit an existing Shipping Method to make minor adjustments – e.g. the Shipping Cost.

Shipping Methods should only be added to Shipping Zones that include the postal codes in the Sub-zone Condition Group.

Save Your Settings

Click the Save button!
